Weston Solutions History/Background
Founded in 1957 as Roy F. Weston, Inc., WESTON today is a multidisciplinary firm providing integrated and sustainable solutions and financing to environmental, facility construction, and real estate development projects. In the 1950s, WESTON primarily provided environmental services to industrial clients throughout the country and established themselves as national experts in water and wastewater management systems. Since then, they have retained their original capabilities while continuously expanding into new service lines to support their strategic clients. By the late 1970s, WESTON became one of the first US EPA emergency response contractors; this support has grown to the level where today WESTON is one of the leading Superfund contractors supporting virtually all EPA regions and has often risen to the occasion of leading large response teams for national emergencies such as the World Trade Center, the anthrax scare, the Columbia shuttle, and Hurricane Katrina. WESTON has repeatedly achieved high marks in the Engineering News Record rankings – in 2006 they placed in the top 10 or 25 in a dozen environmental categories.
Real estate development is a core and growing WESTON service in which they participate as an equity investor and/or equity contractor and developer in the remediation and redevelopment of environmentally contaminated properties. These projects include Early Transfers and Enhanced Use Leasing at DoD installations, as well as guaranteed fixed price remediation and redeveloped properties for industrial, state, and local government clients. To date, WESTON has been chosen by the Army through a competitive selection process to develop five EUL projects – their Fort Sam Houston EUL project is operational with rental income flowing and in-kind money placed in the installation’s account, while two other EUL projects are in the pre-master lease planning stages.
In 2002, after becoming an employee-owned company, the company name was changed to Weston Solutions, Inc. Today, 72 percent of WESTON’s total business is for the Federal government. The DoD represents 47 percent of WESTON’s total business, with the Air Force being the service with the largest share (64 percent of the DoD market). Since the beginnings of their support to Air Force programs in 1980, WESTON has clearly established itself as the Air Force’s contractor of choice as they have performed over 950 projects valued at $1.0 billion.
